The AK-74 is an assault rifle which favors power over speed.
The AK-74 is a powerful weapon at medium to long ranges and in team roles that may place one in a variety of situations. Its bullet trajectory is somewhat straight, yet somewhat curved. The wielder must be accurate with this weapon, as the firing rate is much slower than that of all the other automatic weapons. Fortunately, the AK-74 is still rather forgiving to less accustomed users, as the magazine size is quite large. It is advised to fire the AK in bursts to maintain accuracy (see Tactics), not just for self-bink or movementacc, but also to help the user aim his shots carefully so that he may maximize the usage of his ammo capacity.

[edit] Strengths
- Highly versatile
- High Damage
- Works best at Medium-Long Range
- Large 40-shot magazine
[edit] Weaknesses
- Slow rate of fire, therefore having low Damage Over Time. Makes up with high damage.
- Its reload is pretty fast for a gun with high ammo, but slow in firefights.
Note: before Soldat 1.4, Damage 113, fireinterval 11, bink -40, movementacc 1 (later 2)
Note: as of Soldat 1.4.2, Damage 103, fireinterval 10, bink -16, movementacc 2
[edit] Characteristics
Compared to the Steyr AUG, the AK-74 bears slightly slower but more powerful bullets, a significantly slower rate of fire. So why take the Kalashnikov? The answer: ammo. The AUG eats through magazines very quickly (although its reload rate is slightly higher as well), so it often happens you have to reload in the midst of a bunch of enemies. Using the AK, however, with its large magazine and slow rate of fire, lets you shoot and shoot without running out of ammo (use short bursts or fire each bullet individually for precision). Or at least you can keep a reserve of about 10 rounds to find a secure place to reload.
Compared to the Minimi, the AK's damage over time as well as bullet speed are lower than that of the Minimi, and has 10 less ammo. However, the Minimi tends to be highly inaccurate and it has a horrendously longer reload.
[edit] Tactics
The AK-74 is well-suited for both offensive and defensive usage. In either case, keep a medium distance; you can get closer than you'd want with a Steyr, but keep away from users bearing D'eagles, MP5s, or SPAS-12s, as these all crush the AK at close quarters. When attacking, try to maintain an altitude advantage (but then, everybody tries that). When defending, retreat as you fire to maintain an ideal fighting range.
All things considered, the AK-74 is ideal for servers with many slots (10+) and/or short respawn times. Wherever you encounter many enemies simultaneously or in short intervals, the Kalashnikov really shines. On smaller servers with 6-8 or so slots, the Steyr or MP5 is probably a better choice as an automatic.
- The AK-74 is mainly meant for large fields and a supportive position and is quite effective for escaping enemy pursuers in multiple directions. It is not very effective with fast rushers, as it may take too long to kill them before they achieve an easy distance from you.
- A way to avoid accuracy impairment: Tap the mouse-button, don't just hold it down. It makes you more accurate, and that's how you can overcome some of the more fast-firing weapons like the MP5 or the Steyr. An alternative to this method is to fire the AK in bursts of 2-3 each time and only hold down when the enemy is directly in front of you.
