Capture the Flag
From wiki.soldat.nl
Capture the flag, usually shortened to CTF is the most popular gamemode in Soldat, together with DeathMatch. It is the default gamemode in clanwars and can be played on a large number of public servers with the largest number of maps of all of Soldat's gamemodes.

[edit] Strategy
In CTF, there are two teams, Alpha and Bravo. The goal is to steal the enemy team’s flag, and bring it to your base. Both flags have to be in the flag pit to be able to score. When a team's flag is stolen by the enemy team, the stolen flag can be returned upon proximity, after the enemy flag carrier is killed.
In clanwars, it is common that this mode is played with 3 players on each team.

[edit] Tactics
This part isn't supposed to make you play like all others do, but merely covers basic information about popular tactics employed in CTF matches and other random information.
[edit] In General
- It's almost necessary to use taunts or a form of voicechat (like TeamSpeak or Ventrilo) to inform your teammates of the current situation.
- It can be handy to colour your 'nades purple (or another notable colour) in order to be more aware of them (recoloring graphics is not really considered as cheating).
[edit] 2vs2
2vs2 CTF isn't played much in the form of competition, but it can be a good form of training. Most times it comes down on stealing the enemy flag while your own flag is stolen, so the flag carrier will stay at base defending the enemy flag until someone is able to return his own flag. Good maps for a 2vs2 CTF are ctf_Nuubia and ctf_Kampf.
- Mostly, the 2 players should take one main route; if they split, the duo may lose their flag more easily, but it can cause distortion by taking an alternative path now and then. This doesn't really count for most of the favourite 2vs2 maps, because you can mostly spot all enemies on smaller maps.
- In case both flags are stolen, let the enemy attacker pass. Hope you can return your flag and your teammate will kill the enemy attacker, create a 1vs1 if you feel the better player.
[edit] 3vs3
CTF games are mostly played 3vs3. The most common tactic nowadays is "2 up 1 down", which means that 2 players take a main route and one takes an alternative one to attack and try to steal the enemy flag. The "down" player is mostly a specialized alternative route player, that will go up or down, depending on each map. On Voland it's more likely to be "1 up 2 down".
- It is advised to have 2 players on the main route, and 1 player at the alternative route, although sometimes it can be handy to change this tactic for one spawn to confuse the enemy team.
- It is advised to stick together on the main route. Your chances of killing enemy soldaten will be increased greatly that way.
- In most cases, a good offense is the best defense, though in some maps it is advised to have a defender. (e.g. ctf_Run, etc.)
[edit] 4vs4
4vs4 isn't really popular these days; 3vs3 is the main format for a CW. Most CTF clans are trained in 3vs3 games and especially trained on the default maps ctf_B2b and ctf_Laos, and some other popular maps like ctf_Voland.
4vs4 is mostly referred to as "much spray and lag." In past times it was an obligation to play 4vs4 during the playoffs of several tournaments and it was a good solution if more than 3 members of a clan wanted to play. Now it seems to be rather unpopular and playing a 4vs4 has become rather isolated and special.
But it can be tactical to choose for a 4vs4 on important matches. The chance on high losses can be diminished by choosing for a 4vs4. The constant respawning of your teammates after dying gives less chance for the enemy to break trough the defence in order to reach your base to steal your flag. The same goes for the enemy, of course, so score won't rise too quickly. However, you have more possibilities to recover from a 0 - 1 score then 0 - 4 by an accidental or lucky cap. Also, in 4vs4 the outcome doesn't depend so much on 1 player's performance in particular, if someone has a bad day, which is a commonly occurring phenomenon in Soldat; the others will be more able to bear it.
- It is most common to play with 3 players on the main route (1 can be a defender) and 1 on the alternative route. The defender can easily gun down the [probably most] wounded enemies at base.
- On some maps you can design special tactics with 4 players. Like on ctf_Run, for example 2 up, 1 middle, and 1 down.
- Have a 4vs4 if you think the enemy doesn't have 4 real good players, but you do.
- Choose a 4vs4 if you are a weaker team; the opponent will most probably agree, because they know they are a better team (that they will most likely win anyways). But on 4vs4 you have more chance on a good result.
- It can be an advantage to play on smaller maps, hence the outcome of a 4v4 will become more unsure, with more boost and less chance to keep your flag safe. Less experienced players can lose control of it on very large maps easily.
