The map we know today has three different routes, plus one on top. However, the original version of ctf_Voland never had upper entrances nor a hole in the top-middle ceiling—the spawn zones only had one exit. Later versions opened up the bases, but the top route was covered in deadly polygons, making the top route very dangerous to use. Finally, the deadly polygons were pushed back so that only about half of the top route is lethal, and the strategic upper route was created that we know and love today.

- Certain polygons in the bases are deadly, which causes problems for players waiting for their flag to return because they frequently and unintentionally kill themselves. Voland was recently bastardized by version 1.4.

- The upper polygon which players spawn on regenerates health without the need for MediKits.
