In Soldat, when one spawns, one has half the server-specified limit of grenades available (if the max. is not an even number, the amount one spawns with is rounded down). You can throw grenades and blow up opponents. Grenades will explode in a number of cases.

  1. When time runs out in three seconds a grenade explodes (anyone near will be injured by its splash damage).
  2. Grenades explode upon collider impact.
  3. Grenades explode upon touching any Soldaten.
  4. Grenades will explode if another explosive is detonated upon them, such as a less recently thrown grenade, or a M79-launched grenade or a M72 LAW rocket.

Grenade balance is a subject of debate since it has the capacity to kill in a single hit when thrown in the legs, deal heavy damage, is explosive (so it can push enemies away) and can be thrown very quickly. It is also one of the factors that is known to unbalance Soldat weapons, such as the Spas-12.

[edit] In-game tactics

Standard Grenades.
Standard Grenades.
  • Although all laws of physics and human anatomy demand that two hands hold an XM214 Minigun (although we never agreed that soldaten are really human at all), a grenade can still be thrown even when a weapon is being fired. Any weapon EXCEPT the minigun while it is being fired.
  • Try running towards an enemy while firing an automatic weapon, then when the aforementioned enemy is almost dead throw a grenade in his path. If you do this fast enough you can kill an enemy within a few seconds.
  • The grenade is unique in that it does more damage to the legs than to the torso and head. A grenade blast to the legs is an instant kill. Therefore, if an enemy gains a height advantage over you, use a grenade to turn the tables.
  • The grenade animation can be shown much more clearly if a grenade is thrown while a Combat Knife is equipped.
