The M72 LAW is a one-shot death, long-range secondary weapon. It has a very slow reload and has to be fired from a crouch or prone position. In a recent version update, (1.3.0), a small firing delay was added to the LAW to balance up this secondary.

[edit] History

The LAW was added on 13-6-2003 in version 1.1.4 together with the Combat Knife and Chainsaw. (Before 1.1.4, the USSOCOM was the only secondary.) Upon conception, the LAW could be fired in mid-air while proning or crouching. This allowed much greater versatility when used, thus causing it to be considered overpowered, leading to subsequent nerfings. In 1.1.5 the LAW was made to reload faster and was given minor smoke effects when fired. It has a long reload and due to multiple reload exploits that resulted in double- or even triple-LAW rocket barrages, 1.3.0's reload-fix was introduced; i.e., all discarded weapons picked up from that point on required full reloading.

[edit] In-game tactics

Standard M72 LAWs.
Standard M72 LAWs.
  • Stay close to the ground when you want to use it. The LAW requires you to crouch to fire. Try crouch-walking if enemies are near (but not close enough), and let fly.
  • Upon initially spawning, don't whip out the LAW and run into the middle of combat. The LAW is not a close-range weapon. If you're in the air and an enemy appears and you need to use it instantly, better to prone in mid-air and already be in the correct stance as soon as you land on terrain rather than prone/crouch then (perhaps even superman a bit to reach available ground more quickly).
  • Watch your teammates! Many LAWyers have committed suicide because a moronic teammate stepped in front of them while they fired.
  • In realistic mode, the LAW can be more strategically used as a sniper weapon; stay off to the side of a battle, and surprise your victim. In realistic CTF, you can wait behind a bunker facing towards your base. When the enemy hops over the bunker, he won't see you, but you can nail him in the back.
  • Beware of colliders. Before you fire, check ahead to see if the LAW is going to go farther than a foot before exploding.
  • Crouch or prone is your choice, and what the immediate situation demands; LAWyers can get up immediately from a crouching position, but are taller than those on their chests and are more liable to come under retaliatory fire. Prone takes a bit longer to get up, but you can possibly avoid more bullets that way.
  • LAW rockets can also be used to propel teammates in far distances.
  • LAW rockets can be fired in a 45-60 degree angle, creating a 'mortar' effect. It's considered a lucky kill if you manage to kill someone with a mortar shot.
