Realistic mode

Realistic mode is exactly what it sounds like. You no longer have x-ray vision because your line of sight is obstructed by your surroundings, the weapons have more recoil and typically kill in fewer hits, and if you fall from a great height at a high velocity you will lose health from the fall without cushioning it with your jet boots. Realistic mode works very well with the gamemode Infiltration because it allows players to use the element of surprise.

Many realistic servers are also set to Survival mode, which requires more careful playing as it makes every man count.

[edit] Weapon differences between Normal and Realistic

You will find that for Realistic mode, some weapon choices make more sense than in Standard mode, and some less:

More common:

  • HK MP5: Very popular, since it can fire off many bullets quickly, and a few hits during a spray are enough for a kill. Range is still limited so this is better for more confined quarters.
  • AK-74: A good weapon for most to use; containing powerful bullets and a large capacity. A draw back is its slower rate of fire, and higher recoil if not shot in bursts.
  • Steyr AUG: A good choice for open maps, as it will enable you to get a couple of headshots in at longer ranges than the MP5. It can require more skill, though.
  • SPAS-12: At close range, the shotgun gives the fastest and most reliable one-hit-kill in realistic mode. It is good for controlled spraying downhill, specially in enclosed areas.
  • Ruger 77: One of the more popular weapons in realistic mode, this rifle can kill in one hit when fired at the head. You still need to be a good marksman due to the strong upward recoil as foes may not give you a chance to let off another shot, therefore you are much more dangerous on open maps.
  • Minimi: Well rounded gun with the highest capacity of ammo, next to the minigun. Powerful, but takes some time to reload.
  • USSOCOM: even a few hits of this sweet little peashooter can take an enemy down. Recommended when your primary weapon is something with low ammo and/or long reload time (Ruger, M79, Barret, Minimi).

Less common:

  • M79: this is a "slight case of overbombing"—you simply don't need to dish out that much damage in one shot, so few people use it.
  • Barret M82A1: the only advantage it holds over the Ruger is its zoom ability, so it only makes sense in large, open maps, and even there it is less dominating than in Standard mode. Players usually combine it with the SOCOM as secondary weapon, in the situation that you miss and the enemy fires back.
  • Minigun: Not taken seriously by most players, the minigun can be underused. With high recoil and somewhat low damage, most players shy away from this monster. Though difficult to manage, it can be a very effective weapon, allowing longs periods of fire due to its large ammo capacity; that is if you can handle the recoil.
